Daytona Beach, FL - Seaside Music Theater has some exciting news for the children of Central Florida about its January 31st auditions for Annie - Florida children only need apply. Seaside will audition girls living in Central Florida for the seven roles available in Annie, the theater's Summer 2004 opener, including the coveted title role.
In the past, Seaside has extended audition opportunities to children nationwide along with their calls for adult professional actors. But for Annie, the artistic staff, including the production's director, Donna Drake, wants to find the raw talent that can not be taught in acting classes. A natural ability to light up a room is higher on the list of requirements for choosing the roles of Annie and her six spunky orphan buddies than professionally trained voices and exceptional dance skills, leveling the playing field for children with little performance experience.
"We are looking for kids who have big personalities and are fun to be with, who, most importantly, can keep up with the rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule required by a professional theater of this magnitude," says Jerry Lapidus, Seaside's Company Manager. Lapidus added that a child who expects consideration should also have a pleasant singing voice, the ability to move pretty well, a willingness to take direction, and a parent or guardian who is committed to getting her to the mandatory three weeks of rehearsal and 20 performances taking place between May 25 and June 27.
At the auditions, children will be expected to sing two contrasting songs of their choice, to recite a short poem, speech, or monologue also of their choosing, and possibly to follow a few dance steps.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the budding actresses of Central Florida and an opportunity for Seaside to discover new talent in the area, the January 31st auditions will definitely be a groundbreaking experience for all involved.
There are still a limited number of time slots open for auditions. Those interested should call Jerry Lapidus at 386-681-2795 for further instruction. Annie runs June 10 - 27 at the DBCC Theater Center location, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. in Daytona Beach. The 2004 Summer lineup also includes Two Gentlemen of Verona, June 17 - July 4, La Perichole, July 8 - 18, The Cocoanuts, July 15 - August 1, and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, July 29 - August 15. Please call the Box Office at 252-6200 for subscription information.
